DISENGAGEMENT OF WORKERS IN EBSU: PROF .OGBU REFUTES ALLEGED SACK OF 300 MEMBERS OF ITS STAFF

The Ebonyi State University on Friday refuted an alleged sack of over 300 members of its staff.

The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof Chigozie Ogbu, however, admitted that only 63 staffs were disengaged under non academic category while 136 affected persons were contract and adjunct academic staff.

Ogbu, who made this known in Abakaliki, said that the rumours and insinuations found in various social media platforms were false.
He enumerated reasons for the disengagement to include over stay in service, non-retirement, falsification of ages and qualifications.

The vice chancellor also said that the action was in line with the decision of the governing council ordering staff audit exercise in the university.

He added that after its 82nd regular meeting, the audit committee report was approved through which list of staff to be disengaged and reasons for their relief were made known.

He said: “These rumours and allegations of over 300 workers sacked are nothing but total falsehood and a figment of imagination of those peddling them.

“The affected persons are 63 under non-academic category whose service records were found to be false and 136 academic staff with their various discrepancies whose contracts might not be renewed.

“Each staff was confronted with findings in his or her record that have no evidence to counter the findings.”

He explained that the 29 persons out of the affected persons claimed that their First School Leaving certificates were obtained at ages eight, nine and seven respectively.
Ogbu said that among them were those who could not defend their certificates.
According to him, the affected academic staffs were those under contract and adjunct who had retired after the ages of 70 and some with primary employment in other places.

The vice chancellor pointed out that the exercise was to create opportunities for young professors, academics and other qualified persons who were yet to get employment.

He added: “This exercise will put the university in a better standard before its foreign counter parts which had advised that young dynamic academics should be engaged in line with global best practices.”
