The Public Relation Officer (PRO) Charles Efosa Odigie said its unfortunate and an indication that students allow themselves to be influenced by the school environment where they have more freedom.
The PRO backed his statement by saying that from the command recent arrest by drug offenders in the state, that female students of the unizik were the major people who formed the offenders. He however called for reorientation .
The NDLEA spokesman while addressing students on a one day symposium tagged 'Curbing school dropout and drug abuse' in Awka the state capital regretted the high level of drug abuse in tertiary institutions.
There is high rate of drug abuse in tertiary institutions duo to the absence of enough school hostels on campus making it difficult to control students who abuse these substances. Majority of students live off campus in lodges were neither the landlords or care takers are there to control them.
The story would been different if they are to be within the school premises. Failure form parents to care and monitor their children activities in tertiary institutions are one of the major contributors to high rate of social ills in the society.
He tasked parents not to leave the training of their wards to teachers alone.
NDLEA will continue to sensitise the public on the dangers of drugs abuse. NGOs and government agencies should join hand as we fight this menace. Ndi Anambra should should report cases of drug abuse to the commands.
Recently, the international day against drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking was marked were the state commander NDLEA Anambra chapter Sule Momodu (Fsi) emphases that the fight against these scourge is a collective effort.
