HOUSEHILD DISCUSSION ON GENDER BASED VIOLENCE AMAIYI



The implementation of Household Discussion on Gender and Sexual Based

Violence has started in earnest in Amaiyi, Ogbaru North Local Government Area

of Anambra State, with the presentation of the Community Educators trained for

that purpose to their kinsmen.

The programme which was implemented by Coalition of Eastern NGOs, CENGOS,

organised by Civil Research Development and Documentation Centre, CIRDDOC

with support from Amplify Change in order to curb the rising cases of gender

violence in the society through community efforts.

Speaking at the event, the Programme Officer, Coalition of Eastern NGOs

CENGOS, Mr. Oluebube Ngige, noted that the programme which is implemented

in the 6 eastern States of the federation including Bayelsa, uses a grassroots

based approach, designed to curb all forms of violence against men and women in

the country.


 

He said that society will advance better when women are recognized as an

integral part of the growth and development of the family noting that what we

teach our children rubs off on their perception of themselves.

For her part, broadcast journalist and Head of Television, Anambra Broadcasting

Service, Mrs Ify Unachukwu, said that with the increase in number cases of abuse

and molestation, research has shown that the family has a great role to play in

stopping gender violence in our communities.

While welcoming the participants, the Traditional Ruler of Amaiyi, Igwe

Emmanuel Mbanefo, commended CENGOS for its unrelenting efforts towards

stopping the malaise, promising to ensure the success of the campaign.

For his part, the President General, Amaiyi Community, Nwanze Afubero, frowned

at the increase in child labour, human trafficking and rape in society, describing

them as forms of modern slavery.

Other members of the community, Lolo Chika Mbanefo, Mr Okwudili Obi and

Mrs. Nancy Achike, applauded the programme while pledging to cascade the

knowledge garnered to others.
