The Coordinator, Coalition of Eastern NGOs, CENGOS, Anambra State Chapter, Professor Mercy Anagbogu, has called on Ndi Anambra to unite as a people, in order to eliminate violence against persons, sexual molestations and defilement against minors.
She made the call
during an interactive session involving members of CENGOS, Community Educators
from Ufuma newly trained on Household Discussion to eliminate Gender Based
Violence and other community members
The event was designed
to forge acceptance for the Community educators and ensure the realization of
the project objectives.
Earlier, the
traditional Ruler of Ufuma, Igwe Chika
Ucheime, who listed gender
Based Violence to
include rape, abuse against house helps, human trafficking, wife beating among
others, thanked the group for
volunteering to work towards an inclusive society.
In his introductory remarks, the Programme Officer, CENGOS, Oluebube Ngige, noted that the strategy of Household Discussion on Gender and Sexual Violence is to instill confidence in community members while ensuring confidentiality.
On her part, the legal Adviser of the
organization, Barrister Ifeoma Katchy, emphasized the need for early reportage
of rape cases so as not to destroy the evidence that will ensure the
prosecution of the culprit.
A cross section of the
community members including, Nze Okenna Nwangwu, the Woman Leader, Ufuma community, Mrs Esther Nnebe and Chief Emmanuel
Okoli, expressed their willingness to be a part of the change process.
