Over 5,000 people get free medical care from Anambra legislator By: Ifeanyi Okonkwo

Member representing Anambra East constituency at the 7th Assembly, Obinna Chris Emenaka, has provided free medical care to over five thousand patients including those suffering from HIV/AID, High blood pressure, Malaria, Hernia and Kidney in Umuer, Anam, Otuacha, Aguleri and Nando communities in Anambra East Local Government Area of the State that formed part of his constituency.



Emenaka, while addressing the beneficiaries of the medical care, at the flagging off outreach of the 2019 edition held at Umueri General Hospital said the intervention was geared towards addressing the medical needs of his constituents, especially the indigent and less privileged persons in the society and that the outreach will as well visit other communities in his constituency, where there would also received their free medical services.


The lawmaker further stated that, “The free medical outreach that started 9 years ago, is aim at assisting many of his constituents who have medical needs, provide them the opportunity to assess medical care free of charge, make referrals where necessary to tertiary health institutions, especially the state owned- Chukwuemeka Odumegu Ojukwu University Hospital, Amaku Awka.


“We assembled this team of medical experts with various specialties to attend to the needs of the people and counsel accordingly. I am concerned because so many people need health intervention, we are pleased that this outreach has yielded positive result; we are equally embarking on measures that would improve the lifestyle of our people.

Some of the beneficiaries while speaking with reporters in an interview expressed gratitude to the lawmaker for his kind gesture in coming to their aid. Joseph Egbuche, commended Emenaka for the free medical care, describing him as a God sent to Ndi Anambra East.  According to him “The medical attention so far given to me is okay, my desire is for the lawmaker to make referrals in my case to a teaching hospital and take care of my medical bills and that of others that has severe ailment, he appealed. A kidney patient, Emmanuel Okoro, disclosed that he was diagnosed of the ailment five years ago at an undisclosed hospital in Benin, Edo State and that he had been on routine visits to hospitals which rendered him helpless.


Leader of the medical team, Dr. Kelvin Otto, said the team had identified patients with high blood pressure who were not aware that they were hypertensive.


Emeneka who is the House committee chairman on Budget and Appropriation and also among the two highest serving  lawmakers of the 7th Assembly (3 terms), since representing his constituency in 2011 has engaged the services of over 70 medical experts comprising doctors, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory scientists, among others, to administer health care services to indigent members of his constituency.

The event witnessed  the presence of Traditional Ruler of Umueri community, HRM Igwe Ben Emeka, his Aguleri counterpart, Igwe Mike Idigo,  Commissioner for Health, Dr. Vincent Okpala, Executive Chairman, Anambra state Health Insurance Agency, Dr. Simeon Onyemaechi, President Generals of the five designated communities, among other top government functionaries.
